I had a “friend” who in his idiotic teenage years learned the family minivan could do 119, so I’ll believe it.
Also, that “friend” was a grade-A moron. I’m glad he’s not around anymore.

I mean my 1990 Corolla could do 110MPH flat out all day and and most modern cars can do 120 easy. so yeah I see no reason a Sonata couldn’t do that.

It’s really almost as much as question about the road at rush hour as the car. MoPac is a parking lot during rush hour.

Hmm. I had the same “friend”. And he found out a 92 Accord could do 118 on Parmer at 5 pm. So I totes believe it can be done on MoPac.

117mph = 190km/h... most cars can do that provided they’re not electronially limited. Hell... I know an 88HP 1991 Ford Escort could do at least 180km/h.
A Sonata with the more recent V6 should be able to easily do 140+mph... probably even 150 if the conditions are right... though the car’s official top speed is lower than that:

Depends on what part. After the 183 flyover headed north it opens up for about a mile or so.

With lots of Jersey walls and cops. I live just off MoPac north. For me, this story is more about the “117 during rush hour” part, since that seems so laughably impossible in this town.

I agree. Its pull my hair out frustrating when I need to travel on MoPac around rush hour. I live and work in North Austin so I don’t have to deal with it often.

I'm a musician, so getting to gigs on time is crucial. I will usually allow at least 90 minutes to get from Pflugerville to downtown, even when it isn't rush hour. Once you're on MoPac or I35, there is simply no other way to go.

And with a pregnant woman in the car. Classy guy.

Slaughter and Mopac is a dangerous intersection, because of dumbasses. Mostly speeding dumbasses who miss the light. Seen several terrible accidents there, and at least one fatality. If they were going 117 mph, they were probably also driving on the shoulder, because that section gets pretty backed up around that time of day.

I also had the same “friend.” He took his mom’s Honda CRV up to 119mph in “Mexico.”

I don’t question that it was possible in a Sonata. I question that there was enough space on the MoPac during rush hour to even get up to 100 mph at all. I mean, I know the MoPac isn’t half as bad as the 35, but I’ve gotten on the MoPac at 6pm more than once and found myself unable to break 50 for long stretches.
